Productivity During the Pandemic

May 21, 2020

In these times more than ever, I feel that it is particularly important to structure your time in order to stay productive during the day. Whether for you that means working from home with kids, home schooling your kids, or just simply working from home in a new environment compared to the office.

Create a routine.

For everyone in the family. Although it may seem like a vacation at first, staying at home without a routine can be hazardous to you and your family. If you are home alone, great. Relax in your quiet environment but keep yourself accountable with a time frame.

If you are the lucky few and are home with kids while trying to work, it’s important to set up a routine and boundaries.

Set Working Hours.

Let your kids and significant other know when your working hours are and when they are established. I prefer to work in 45 minute blocks. I find that past 45 min I am not as focused, and I find my kids need something at that point. For 10-15 minutes I will check on the kids and step away from my computer.

It's equally important for individuals with no kids to set boundaries and stop times. Your kitchen and living room are literally right next to your office while working from home. It is easy to skip breakfast and lunch or eat while working. It is also fairly easy to surpass your normal work hours.

Set alarms on your phone for cut off times. I like to do so for water check ins, lunch, and stop times during and at the end of the day.

Set up a home office.

Although you may think sitting on the couch is the best, it's not. Have a dedicated area for performing your work that you can leave at the end of the day. Even if you don't have an actual office, a kitchen table will suffice.

Get ready every day.

You will feel better. I promise. Now, I’m not saying you need to put on your suit and heels everyday but take a shower, wash your hair every few days, and put different clothes on. If makeup keeps you happier and feeling like your best self, put it on!

Move your body every day.

I don’t necessarily mean to work out for 30+ min everyday but move your body. If this means working out, than go for it. I will be there with you. If you would rather take your dogs on a walk, do yoga, or meditate then go for it! Moving your body will release your mind, enhancing both your mind and body.

This pandemic hasn't been easy. Many of us are battling kids, working from home, home schooling, and just the mental battle of not leading a normal life. Keep up your schedule the best you can, set boundaries, have a home office, get ready everyday, and move your body. These small attributes to your every life will keep you productive.
